Word Work

Dear Mom and Dad:

Thank you for helping me post on the blog yesterday! It was really neat to see all of the words that we came up with inside the word "mathematics".

In the morning we worked on word work. It is important for me to build my confidence in my writing and write down the words I hear. I listened to a word and heard it in a sentence, then I had to write down the sounds I heard in the word. We will be working in small groups to strengthen our writing skills. You can encourage me to write by asking me to help write you notes to remind you of something, labeling items with a post it note, write the grocery list etc. This is what we call kid writing and that it's ok to write down the sounds you hear. We also added a new reading strategy to our wall called "tryin' lion" ask me to teach you this reading strategy.

We worked on some writing all about me! I had to answer some questions about what my favorite food was, color, hobby subject, what I want to be when I grow up etc. We will be putting this writing in a special time capsule. We learned that a time capsule is something you put away and then re open it sometime later. We will be writing and answering the exact same questions at the end of the school year and compare our answers and writing skills. It will be really neat to see how much I've grown by the end of the school year.

In math we looked at growing patterns. I can tell you what a growing pattern is. For example: AB, ABB, ABBB, ABBBB, ABBBB is a growing pattern. The letter B grows by one each time.

Mrs. McEvoy's class had music this afternoon. Ask me to tell you what I am learning in music.

In gym we continued to practice our ball skills. Ask me to tell you which objects I practiced throwing today.

Happy Monday

Dear Mom and Dad:

We looked at photos from our fall community walk and remembered what we noticed. We are going to be explorers and investigate questions that we might wonder about in fall. We each wrote our wonders on a sticky note and we will be sharing them as a whole class.

Mrs. Deobald's and Mrs. Ly's class had music today. The whole school had a practice fire drill today. Ask me to tell you what my job is when I hear the fire alarm. Our teachers were really impressed with us!

In gym we are learning some ball skills. Ask me to tell you what equipment I used today. Some were tricker than others. I had to make sure that the person I was throwing to is communicating with me and that they are ready to catch the item.

Question of the day: How many words can you find in the word mathematics?

It's fall!

Community Fall Walk

Dear Mom and Dad:

Thank you to all of our parent volunteers for coming with us on our fall walk this morning! We couldn’t have done it without you. Ask me to tell you all of the things I saw. We had to do a scavenger hunt and keep an eye out for certain things such as: a tree with no leaves, pinecones, spiderwebs, water etc. We were great explorers today and collected fall artifacts that we found.

We used our leaves to do some leaf rubbings. It’s like magic! I can try different items at home and using a crayon I can show you what I did. We read a book called “Leaf Man” and created our own character using leaves. It was so neat to see how amazing everyone’s imagination is!

Question of the day: What did you notice from our fall walk today?

Terry Fox Run

Terry Fox Run

Dear Mom and Dad:

What an amazing day we had! In the morning we went out along the pathway where we would be running and wrote messages with chalk on the sidewalk to spread the word about Terry Fox. We came up with juicy words and drew pictures to spread the word.

We enjoyed a picnic lunch outside with our classmates. The weather was beautiful!

Welcome Fall!

Dear Mom and Dad:

We added a few more words to our word wall: of, it, to, that. We refer to our word wall when we need to use them in our writing. They are our "no excuse" words and should be written correctly when we work on writing. We also added a couple of new poems to our poetry folders. We LOVE reading our poems! It helps us with our reading and builds our confidence. We have been doing so awesome with our "jobs" in daily 5. Today we worked on "read to self" and "read to someone". Our reading stamina is really building up. Our teachers are very impressed!

In math we are working on translating patterns. Some of us recorded our thinking in our math journals and others worked with a partner to translate each other's patterns. Ask me to tell you what I did in math.

Did you know that today is the first day of Fall? We read a fall book and talked about the changes that we are seeing all around us. Ask me to tell you some signs of fall. We are all explorers! We are learning what it means to wonder and then investigate. This will be important on our fall walk this Thursday as we think of many questions. I wonder, I notice, It reminds me of.

Question of the day: What do you wonder about fall? Post on the blog your questions and thoughts.

Love,
The Rainbow Triad

Peace Day

Dear Mom and Dad:

We added two new reading strategies to our reading board to help us decode new words. Today we looked at "stretch snake" and "eagle eye". I can use these strategies with you when we read our home reading book! Ask me to review with you what: peeking poodle, chunky monkey, stretch snake, and eagle eye mean. During read to someone we are working on "checking for understanding". I have been asking my reading partner who was in the and where did the story take place. You can ask me these questions after I have read my home reading book with you as well.

In math we are working on translating patterns. Ask me to translate this pattern into actions. ABB ABB ABB (for example, I could show you this pattern by: clap, snap, snap, clap snap snap. )

What does peace feel like? In the afternoon we read a book about what peace feels, looks, tastes, smells and sounds like. We decided to make a classroom peace book! We talked about what kid writing is and that it is ok to write down all the sounds I hear. We also tried to remember to keep all the crayons happy  and make our drawings big, bold and bright. Ask me to tell you what I wrote.

It was so beautiful outside as the entire school went outside for "pinwheels for peace". We each made a beautiful pinwheel and the whole school stood in the shape of a peace sign and raised our pinwheels in the air. We sang our peace songs as well. Ask me to sing you the songs.

Question of the day: Students, please teach your parents what peace means and what they can do to be peaceful. Post your responses on the blog!

Meet the teacher

Dear Parents:

It was so lovely to meet with you this evening. We were so excited to see the excitement in your child as they became the teachers and toured you around the classroom. Thank you for being so supportive with your child's learning. We have such an amazing group and in just the second week of school, the students are settling nicely with routines and classroom expectations. Again, if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to email your child's teacher.

We are looking for parent volunteers for Thursday morning to go on a community walk with us. Please note that you must have a police check clearance done through the CBE. Please e-mail your child's teacher if you would like to volunteer.

We hope you enjoyed having your child share some of their work and classroom with you. Have a great weekend!

There is no school tomorrow because it is a PD day. See everyone on Monday!

Terry Fox lives here!

Dear Mom and Dad:

We started off the morning with a school assembly about Terry Fox. Many of us are familiar with who Terry Fox and have participated in the Terry Fox Run before. Next Wednesday we will be having a school picnic (please see below in housekeeping for more information)

We drew pictures of our summer memories to put into our visual journals. We learned a lot about each other by looking at each other's pictures that we drew.

In gym, we learned a new game. It was so much fun and we were actually exercising while doing some math as well! Ask me to tell you how to play this game. I can play this game at home using a deck of cards.

Question of the day: Why is Terry Fox considered a hero?

Housekeeping:

Dear Cranston Families,
Cranston School will be participating in the Terry Fox Celebration this year.  The focus of this year’s celebration will be participation and the awareness of the accomplishments of Terry Fox and the need to keep his dream alive.  This is our fifth anniversary of our school run.  For this reason this year’s goal is to raise $5000 as a school.  Students will have three opportunities to raise funds:
1.)   Bring a donation to the school to put in our fund raising jar.
2.)   Pledge forms – these will go home on Wednesday, Sept. 17
3.)   On-line pledges - go to http://www.terryfox.org  -click on donate to a student or school and follow the links.
Please only give what you feel comfortable with.  Every little bit counts!
Our theme this year is “Spread the Word.”  Our students will be sharing their learning about Terry Fox in their classrooms. This year our school run will be on Wednesday, September 24th. We would like to make this event a Family Run.  We encourage all families to join us at the school at 2:00 pm for a quick assembly and a special run through the Cranston pathways to the windmill.  We hope that the weather cooperates and we will be sharing some of our writing along the route.
We are also having a Terry Fox Hot Dog Picnic on Wednesday, September 24th.  If the weather cooperates we will be having our hotdogs outside with our classmates.  If the weather doesn’t cooperate we will have our picnic lunch in the school.  We ask that students bring a small blanket or a beach towel for their picnic lunch.  The money raised from the hot dog lunch will go to our fund raising effort.
Thank you,
Teresa Bowles

Read to someone

Dear Mom and Dad:

We practiced another component in the Daily 5 called "read to someone". This was good practice for our friends who have practiced before as well. Ask me to tell you what "EEKK" means during read to someone. We all did a great job quickly finding a reading partner and getting started right away. We are working on reading in a quiet voice to our partner so that we are not disrupting others.

I have a home reading book in my red folder envelope. (**Mrs. Ly's class did not get a chance to get home reading books today. we will bring these home tomorrow **) I can return this book back in the envelope when I have finished reading. Ask me to use strategies such as peeking poodle (looking at the pictures and words to see if it makes sense) chunky monkey (chunk the words).

We worked on a summer memory visual page this afternoon. We also finished our self portraits. I can't wait to show you my art on Thursday night!

Question of the day: What does "EEKK" mean?

What I know about grade 1/2

Dear Mom and Dad:

We began the morning with "read to self". We continue to build up our reading stamina each day as we read. We added our first poem to our poetry folders! I can practice reading my poems during our daily 5 literacy block. This will help me learn words I am unfamiliar with and help me build up my reading skills.

Thank you to the grade 2's for being such great leaders, they helped the grade ones today by reading some of the questions. Today we worked on a visual journal page and we had to answer questions about" what we know in grade 1 or 2.

In grade one I can: show you what letters I know, draw a detailed picture, write about my picture, show you what numbers I know.

In grade two I can: write down the words I know, write a story, draw a picture to go with my story.

In gym we continue to work on team building, communication and cooperation. We got into groups of 5 and had to toss a ball to one another in a "star shape". I had to make sure I was communicating to the person I was throwing the ball to so that they were able to catch and then throw it to the next person.

Question of the day: What are you most interested to learn in grade one, grade two?

Dear Mom and Dad,

Today Mrs. Ly was away so we had a guest teacher.  Luckily, it was the same teacher that visited us on Monday, so she fit right in!

All of our hard work on increasing our reading stamina is really beginning to pay off.  Today we were able to practice Read to Self and stay focused for fifteen minutes of uninterrupted reading time! We are very proud of ourselves!

During writing, we continued the work we started yesterday about the great things that our very own hands can do.  Today we each came up with our own ideas and added them to our writing journal.

Today was our second day of Dance with Ms. Natalka.  We sure had a lot of fun dancing and moving to music.  At the end of dance, Ms. Natalka has been putting us into the same 10 groups.  I wonder what we are going to do in those groups?

Our school community has asked us to remember to pack snacks and lunches with food that do not contain nuts due to the number of students who have allergies.

Tomorrow is Friday, which means it is early dismissal. Please be ready to pick up your students at 12:03.

Have a great night!

With my hands I can...

Dear Mom and Dad:

What a snow storm we had today! We hope everyone got home safely and stay warm.
We worked on a new reading strategy called "Chunky Monkey". This is a strategy I can use to read words that I don't know. We discovered many words and sounds we know in one word. I can look for a chunk I know (-ing, -and, -art, -old) and look for a word part I know (be-, -er), this can help me decode new words.

In writing, we looked at a picture prompt and came up with some questions to wonder about what was happening in the picture. Ask me to describe the picture to you. We talked about what, when, who, why, where questions to help us get our imagination going. During writing, I am working on writing out words with the sounds I hear on my own. It is important for me to be confident in my writing and that I am trying my best.

In the afternoon we worked on an art project. We read the book called "The Best Part of Me" and talked specifically about our hands. We came up with different ideas with this sentence starter, "With my hands I can______". We came up with some great ideas!

".....steer my bike." (Koen)
".....catch things." (Aaron)
"....feel things." (Lincoln)
"....pick up things." (Logan)
"...eat things." (Fiona)
"....wave to people." (Josh)
"......shake hands." (Jack)
"......give ice cream." (Abby)
"........give hugs." (Kaitlyn)

We traced our hands and then used our knowledge of patterns to come up with a colorful design for our hand art. I had to remember to keep all the crayons happy. They turned out beautiful!

Question of the day: What can you do at school with your hands? With my hands I can........

Building stamina

Dear Mom and Dad:

We continued practicing our stamina for reading in our literacy block which we call Daily 5. We have been working on one of the five categories which is called "read to self". Building stamina means that I am building up my reading muscles each day. We reviewed what the 3 ways to read a book is, how to choose a good fit book and what "peeking poodle" means. During "read to self" I can quickly get my book bin, find a good spot, have my eyes on the book and read the entire time.

We worked in our visual journals today and started a page called "What I know about grade 1 and grade 2". I had to follow step by step instructions to make a border for my page using a ruler. With the help of my peers I also followed instructions to glue a series of questions into my journal in the correct order. We all did a fantastic job!

Mrs. McEvoy's group had music this afternoon. We all had gym this afternoon where we are working on how to move about the gym and being a good team player. I should be able to quickly find a partner and or group and work cooperatively with my group members to complete a task.

With the sudden change in weather, please make sure I am properly dressed for outside recess, snow pants, mittens, hats and a warm jacket will help me stay warm outside. Thank you!

Question of the day: What does the reading strategy "peeking poodle" remind us to do?

Patterning

Parents please note:
Door 1 where our class usually enters in the morning is now closed due to safety. Our new door that we will enter will be Door 2. Students will be lining up in single file on the right side of the door.  Due to the large amount of students that will be going in one door, we ask that parents move off the compound to make room for all of the students to be in their appropriate lines. All teachers will be outside tomorrow morning with signs so that your child knows where to line up.
Thank you so much for your patience as we try to sort this routine out.

Dear Mom and Dad:

Ms. Deobald was away so we had a guest teacher. We started the morning by talking about how to pick a good fit book. Ask me to tell you what it means to pick a good fit book. We worked on writing in our journals today. I am encouraged to sound out words on my own. You can help me with this skill by asking me to help write the grocery list all on my own by sounding out the words I hear.

We worked on patterning today in math. I had to build a pattern and show my thinking by transfering my pattern into my math journal.

We had gym with Mr. McDougall, ask me to tell you what I did. I had to work in teams for a challenge!

Question of the day: Patterns are everywhere! Post on the blog a pattern you have found in your home or in nature?

Our first week together

Dear Mom and Dad:

Hooray we completed our first week! We received our visual journals today. Ask me to tell you what I did with the first page. Today the parent council arranged a lovely welcome back breakfast for us. I was given a very nice treat and we enjoyed it outside in the beautiful weather while listening to our peace song.

I went to the learning commons today. I picked two books today and one book is to be kept in my reading bin at school and the other book I can take home with me to share with you. Next week, we will practice and talk about how to pick "good fit" books so that I can choose books that are right for me.

Building up our reading muscles

Tomorrow is Friday which means there is early dismissal. Please remember to pick your child up at 12:03pm.

Dear Mom and Dad:

Thank you so much for helping me post on the blog! Today we started off the morning reviewing what "read to self" was and then practiced reading by reading the pictures and the words. We learned a new reading strategy called "Peeking Poodle". It's when I look at pictures or clues to decode the word. For example if I was stuck on a word I could look at the picture and look at the letters in the words to figure out what it says. A key thing to this strategy is that it should make sense meaning the picture should match the word. We are building our "stamina" in reading which is our reading muscles. As a triad today, we were able to read for 6.5 minutes. This means that the whole class is reading the entire time. My teachers were pretty impressed being that this is only the second day as a triad together! Ask me to tell you what I do when I hear the rainstick sound.

We are learning a name song to help us remember our friends. Hopefully I can teach it to you soon once we get the hang of it. It was beautiful outside today so we played outside on the playground.

I learned a new math game today. Ask me to tell you what math game I learned and what the instructions are.

We got to work on writing today hooray and we also had "author's chair" where some of us got to share our work on the smartboard.

Question of the day:

Reading and Writing

Sorry for the late blog post parents! We are getting the hang of it and will try to post it earlier in the day.

Dear Mom and Dad:

Today we practiced our daily 5 routine by learning to "read to self". Some of us might already be familiar with the daily 5 and it was a great review to of what "read to self" looks like. Ask me to show you what it looks like. Did you know that everyone can read? Today we practiced reading the pictures. Although some of us can read through a book using the words, today we practiced by just reading the pictures. It's amazing what stories we can come up with.

We also worked on writing today in our journals. Ask me to tell you what we wrote about. We read a book called "The Days the Crayons Quit". This is a really funny book about how the crayons are quitting because they are not all being used. I can remember to add detail and color to my drawings in my journal by remembering this book. We had gym for the first time this year!

In math I had to show many different ways to represent a number. Many of us challenged ourselves. We also learned some math games today. Ask me to tell you what math games I learned.

Thank you for sending the red folders back to school with me each day and thank you to the parents who have filled out the forms.

Question of the day: What is your favourite part about school this year so far?

Dear Mom and Dad:

Hooray I completed my first day of grade one or grade two. Ask me to tell you the name of  at least one of my teachers. I am lucky to have three teachers this year. We worked on drawing self portraits and also on decorating a name card for our coat hooks. Our teachers thought we did amazing and demonstrated what it means to build a peaceful classroom environment. I have a red folder in my backpack with some important notices. Please read over these notices and return any forms that need to be returned back into the red folder. I need to bring the red folder to school with me everyday even if you do not have any mail for my teacher.

Question of the day: Post on the blog your name if you read the blog.
