Pumpkin math

Halloween Thursday

Dear Mom and Dad:

We had a busy day today! We read different books today about seeds. Ask me to tell you what I learned. We shared our ideas and recorded them with “What we know about seeds”.

We cut our pumpkins in halves and sketched what we saw. We then listened to a story called “How many seeds does a pumpkin have?” and came up with some ideas of how we can count seeds. We talked about counting them by ones, twos, fives and tens. We then got a chance to explore and count all of the seeds. I worked at table groups to come up with an efficient way to count my seeds.

In the afternoon we thought about what we know now about seeds and then came up with some wonder questions. There were so many great wonders and this will be the start to our seed inquiry.

We had dance in the afternoon with Mrs. Natalka. We danced to thriller and worked in groups to come up with our own dance routines. Ask me to show you some of the moves I used.

We sang happy birthday to all of our October birthdays. Happy Halloween and have a great weekend!

Question of the day: Post on the blog a fact about seeds that you discovered.

We are going on a field trip to the Telus Sparks Centre on Wednesday November 19 for the entire school day. We will need volunteers, please let your child's teacher know if you would like to volunteer. We will be sending field trip forms next week with all of the information. Thank you very much! ** Mrs. Ly’s class currently has no volunteers at the moment for this fieldtrip, if you would like to join us please e-mail lmnguyen@cbe.ab.ca. Thank you.

We will be starting our inquiry for building in a few weeks. We are looking for materials that students can experiment with. If you, or your neighbors have items such as: cereal boxes, paper towel rolls, coffee tins, pringle cans, cardboard etc. Anything that we can build with! We will be asking students to bring these items on the week of November 12. It would be great if you could start collecting now. Thank you!

Wednesday October 29

Dear Mom and Dad:

Mrs. McEvoy was away today, ask me to tell you our guest teacher’s name is I am in her group.

During math, we used our pumpkins as a standard of measurement to measure ourselves! Ask me to tell you how many pumpkins tall I am. We first predicted how many pumpkins tall we thought we were and then actually measured each other and record it in our math journals.

We are looking at how we belong in the bigger picture. Today we drew a picture of ourselves on a small circle and then thought about what else we might belong to, a family. On a slightly bigger circle we drew a picture of our family. We will draw in 6 circles altogether so we can visually see all of the groups that we belong to.

Mrs. McEvoy’s class had music today.

Poetry Tuesday

Dear Mom and Dad:

Please take the time to read our housekeeping items!

We added two new poems to our poetry folders, “Five Little Pumpkins” and “Flutter Flutter Little Bat.” The poems in my poetry folder help me recognize word wall words and the patterned text helps me decode words I don’t know.

In math, we compared pumpkins through measurement. We named some of our pumpkins and came up with some math stories about them. For example, “Lily is smaller than Zack.”  We looked at words such as smaller, thinner, wider, bigger, taller etc.

Ask me to share with you what I worked on in Word work today. Mrs. McEvoy’s class had music today.

Question of the day: Think of a story or measurement about the people or items in your household and post on the blog.

Measuring Monday

Dear Mom and Dad:

Today in math we measured our pumpkins. We first talked about what it means to measure something. In grade one and two I am working with non standard measurement which means that I am using objects to compare and measure items. We then thought of different items in our classroom that we could use to measure. Ask me to tell you what items I used. We talked about the words width and height. Take a look at some of our photos on the blog!

We continued to work on our “all about me” page in our journals. Today I thought about what I am good at and what I would like to get better at. We expressed ourselves using pictures and words.

Question of the day: Measure a family member in your household using any kind of item. Post on the blog your results!

Right to Play

Dear Mom and Dad:

We had an assembly this morning and a group called “Right to Play” presented. We met a man named Chris who lost a leg in a car accident. He is part of an international sport called “sitting volleyball” and competes in the Paralympics.

All three classes had choir today. We did some pumpkin art using pastels today and paint. They all turned out beautifully!

Question of the day: Post on the blog one thing your learned or saw at the Right of Way Assembly this morning.
