Singing

Dear Mom and Dad:

We practiced singing our volunteer song and our Music Monday song! On Monday it is Music Monday and everyone across Canada will be singing the song. I can visit Mrs. McBride's blog to get more information.

Mrs Ly and Ms. Deobald were away this afternoon for a workshop so we had two guest teachers. Both classes had Roots of Empathy. Ask me to tell you about what we learned during Roots of Empathy. We are patiently waiting for our seeds to grow! ask me to tell you if I noticed anything today. Tomorrow we will be looking at what plants need.

Question of the day: post on the blog what you think plants need to survive?

Housekeeping:

The Rainbow Triad is excited to be taking part in the David Suzuki Foundation’s 30x30 Nature Challenge this year! Over the last decade, researchers have documented what most of us know intuitively: nature is good for our health and well being. Being regularly immersed in a natural setting, like a park, field or forest can reduce stress and symptoms of attention-deficit disorders while boosting immunity, energy levels and creativity. The message is clear—kids need nature! During the month of May, we’re joining Canadians coast to coast in spending 30 minutes in nature every day for 30 days.

You can help by making sure your child comes dressed for the outdoors each day. This might require sunscreen, hats, or raincoats—we’ll try to get out no matter the weather. And why not join the 30x30 Nature Challenge as a family? Spending time outside together is good for everyone, not to mention lots of fun.

You can sign up atwww.davidsuzuki.org/30x30. Participants will receive simple ideas for incorporating green time into their busy schedules.

Does it float or sink?

Dear Mom and Dad:

Today we tested our five objects and made our observations with what gloats and what sinks!

We continued working on our volleyball skills.

At the end of the day we worked in our visual journals sketching and writing "how to plant a seed".

Question of the day: What are the steps in planting a seed?

Inquiry projects

Dear Mom and Dad:

Sorry there was no post yesterday! Here is an update on what we have been working on.

Yesterday we had a special guest come to our classroom. It was Mrs. Gates’ father in law and he is an expert in mining. After learning about the resources and occupations of Nova Scotia, we were interested to find out more about coal mining. Ask me to tell you some of the interesting facts I learned.

We also took a closer look at seeds. We drew a detailed picture of our seeds by using our observation skills and magnifying glasses. We then made predictions of what we think our seeds will grow into.

Today we got into groups and started our animal scripts for our public announcement commercial. Ask me to tell you what animal I have been investigating and who my partner is.

We continue to work on our volleyball skills today. Ask me to show you the correct position to bump a volleyball.

We worked in groups at the end of the day to come up with 5 different items for our group to test if it will float or sink. Ask me to tell you what 5 items my group came up with.

Question of the day: Post on the blog what you think your seed will grow into?

Does it float?

Dear Mom and Dad:

Today was Ms. Catsirelis’ last day with us L

We will miss her a lot. She is going to be an amazing teacher and we hope she visits us soon!

Today we began talking about what floats and what sinks? We were scientists today and we had a great discussion about why things float. Some of us said that anything with air will float, or anything light will float. But what about a cruise ship? We learned some new vocabulary such as density, mass, and buoyancy. Buoyancy means the ability or tendency to float in water, air or some other fluid.

Check out our very own Ms. Low’s video that she created for us! Please watch this with me and help me understand some of the concepts if I have any more questions.

We learned a lot of information from her video and using what we know now, we made some predictions about what floats and what sinks. Next week I will be experimenting using different objects and make observations.

Question of the day: What are some of your wonders about boats and buoyancy?

Ketchup Thursday

Dear Mom and Dad:

Mrs. Ly and Ms. Deobald's class both had a baby visit today. Ask me to tell you about our teacher baby and what I noticed about him or her.

We had a busy day today working hard and catching up on some of our work during ketchup time.

We had fun dancing with Ms. Janelle during music!

Question of the day: What kind of dance are we learning in dance?

Levels of Feelings

Dear Mom and Dad:

This morning Constable Mattice worked with the grade twos today. We learned about different feelings and some ways that we can control our feelings when we get frustrated so that it doesn’t escalate to upset and then out of control! Ask me to tell you some of the things I can do to calm myself down when I am feeling frustrated.

We did a special writing activity today. The volunteer tea is coming up next month and we are creating some beautiful writing pieces for the tables. We appreciate all of our volunteers for everything you do!

We have been working on different skills in gym. Ask me to tell you what my favorite station is and what my job is at the station.

Question of the day: Post on the blog what you do to calm down when you are feeling frustrated.

The Rainbow Triad

Memoirs of a Hamster

Dear Mom and Dad:

Constable Mattie came to our class today and worked with the grade ones. She read a story to us and talked about our feelings. I learned that I have different levels of feelings. Ask me to tell you what the different levels are. From calm, to out of control.

We read a story called “Memoirs of a Hamster”. It was such a funny book! Ask me to tell you what it was about. We finished our Diary of a Trout book this afternoon. We will be releasing the fish on Friday May 22. Please check the weekly message updates for more details.

Question of the day: What makes the rainbow triad such a great community?

Love,
The Rainbow Triad
