Poetry

Dear Mom and Dad:

All three classes had music today.

We added two new poems in our poetry folders.

In the afternoon we shared our work in groups. Ask me to tell you what I decided to share.

Question of the day: Post on the blog what the two poems were about.

The Rainbow Triad Crayon Box

Dear Mom and Dad:

We had a great first day back! We got right into the flow of things and started the morning with Daily 5. Our class is getting much better with remembering what our jobs are during daily 5.

We have a new student teacher in our triad. Her name is Mrs. Catsorellis and she is a first year student from the University of Calgary. We love having student teachers as we help them learn what it takes to become a teacher and they also get to work with students in small groups.

In the afternoon we had lots of discussion around what it means to be a leader. We played a game where there was a detective and they had to guess who the leader was. The leader would make up some patterns using their hands and the rest of the class would have to copy the leader. The detective then comes in and tries to guess who the leader was. Have a discussion with me of what it means to be a good leader and what it means to work well in a team. Our teachers told us that it is tricky to be a good leader and even adults would agree!

At the end of the day we worked in groups to draw a rainbow. Each group received a bag with supplies. It wasn't long until we realized that some bags had paper, and some and none. Some bags had only purple and orange crayons and some bags only had green and red. Eventually we realized that we need to work together and share the materials! It's easy for us to talk about what it means to work as a community but it's harder to show it through our actions. Today we definitely were able to "practice what we preach!" Hooray!

We read a book called "The Crayon Box That Talked". Ask me to tell you what this book was about.

Question of the day: Post on the blog something you learned about community building today. It could be what you learned after listening to the story "The Crayon Box That Talked", or from the game we played.

Practicing student led conferences with our classmates!

Spring Break

Dear Mom and Dad:

We presented Mr. Slim our book that we made for him titled, “Tips for Mr. Slim.” He was very touched by our gift. Mr. Slim is a retired principal but still enjoys subbing! We created a book that gives him some tips on what he can doing during his retirement.

We practiced student led conferences during school today. I had a partner and we took turns being the parent and the student. I am very excited to share my learning with you tonight or tomorrow!

Question of the day: Post on the blog what you enjoyed sharing and showing your parents most during student led conferences.

Happy Spring Break! School resumes Monday March 30.

I wonder...

Dear Mom and Dad:

We had a typical Wednesday morning with Daily 5 and Math.

All three classes had music today.

In the afternoon we thought about what we wondered about our animal that we are investigating. Ask me to tell you what were some of the questions I came up with. Asking questions and wondering is an important skill to have as we move into our next inquiry. I am taking ownership of my learning and am able to speak about my learning.

We also looked through our visual journal pages to see what pages might need to be finished.

I am excited to show you my learning tomorrow and Friday!

Question of the day: Post on the blog some of the questions that you wonder about your animal.

St Patrick's Day!

Dear Mom and Dad:

Happy St Patrick’s Day! We added two new poems to our poetry folder. I am getting really good at using the different strategies that we have learned so far to decoded unknown words. I should be able to use these strategies independently.

Ask me to tell you what I am working on in my math group.

We had word work in the afternoon and then continued our investigations of our prairie animals.

Mrs. McEvoy’s class had music in the afternoon.

We had a mini lesson about our feelings and how to recognize others’ feelings. We listened to a book called “ The Saddest King”. You can listen to the book here:

We had a discussion about recognizing verbal and non-verbal cues when people express their emotions and feelings. We also talked about why some people might feel that they need to hide their feelings. In grade one and two I should be able to recognize and demonstrate various ways to express feelings.

Question of the day: How many different words can you discover in the words LEPRECHAUN. You can unscramble the letters to find different words.

Prairie Animals

Dear Mom and Dad:

We started off our morning finishing our “If” art. Ask me to tell you what I came up with. My teachers really enjoyed looking at our art and the ideas that I created

Ask me to tell you what I am working on in math.

In the afternoon we played a fun social game.  We tried to get over 100 points as a class. This is a team building skill and we talked about what it means to belong to a community and what my role is as a member of the Rainbow triad.

We are beginning our investigation about prairie animals. Ask me to tell you which animal I chose to learn more about. Today we looked at non-fiction books to gather information about what my animal looks like. I learned that there is lots of information I can find by reading and looking at the pictures.

Question of the day: What animal are you learning more about? Post a fact that you learned about your animal today.
