BIKE TO SCHOOL DAY

Hi boys and girls Cranston is participating in “Ride your bike to school day.”

Bike to School Day 2015 is coming up, and is taking place on June 2, 2015! Over 8,000 kids are expected to be riding their bikes to school year with a growing number of schools joining the initiative.

On June 2nd, over 50 school and an estimated 8000 students, if not more will be biking to their schools, participating in Calgary Bike to School Day. The mission of this event is to promote healthy active lifestyles in youth and that it can also be fun!  So get on your bikes and ride to school!

SANDWICH MAKING
For those families who were at Cranston last year, you will remember our Sandwich Making Community Project (donations went to the Mustard Seed) that we were involved in and what a HUGE success it was!  For those new to us, throughout the year, we have been working very hard with our students to recognize the importance of giving back to their community.  We would like to participate in this project again this year.  If we could have each student bring in $2 for this project, it will be used to purchase the sandwich items (bread, ham, mustard, butter, cheese slices, Ziploc bags).  Thank you for your support, it is greatly appreciated.

Writing Wednesday

Dear Mom and Dad:

At the end of the day we worked on writing a story using a picture prompt. Ask me to tell you what sequence of pictures that I had to use to help me come up with some of my ideas. My story had to have a beginning, middle and end.  I worked on writing continuously for 30 minutes! My teachers were very impressed as we all used our knowledge of phonics and letter sounds to try and spell words we did not know. I should be able to write independently and trying my best!

Question of the day: What was your favorite part about today?

Happy Monday!

Dear Mom and Dad:

Mrs. McEvoy and Ms. Deobald’s class went swimming today! Ask me to tell you some of the people that are in my swimming group.

Today we started looking more at our mini inquiry projects. I came up with my own topic and I am coming up with different ideas on how I will represent my learning.

Question of the day: We learned some new games today in gym. Post on the blog a new game you learned today in gym.

Measurement

Dear Mom and Dad:

We are off to the pond after school for the trout release.  We hope to see you all there!

Today we met with Ms. Michelle. She is helping our school plan out our naturalization area near the playground. We worked in groups and used plasticine to plan out some ideas!

Today we looked at our pumpkin plants and did some comparisons through measurement. I had to find something that was taller than, shorter than and the same size as my plant. Ask me to tell you what I found.

If I am in grade 1: I can use direct comparison to compare two objects based on a single attribute, such as length (heights), mass (weight) and volume (capacity).

If I am in grade 2: I can compare and order objects by length, height, distance around and mass (weight), using nonstandard units, and make statements of comparison.

Question of the day: Compare the family members in your household and come up with some measurement math sentences to compare them.  For example: In our teacher triad family: Ms. Deboald is taller than Mrs. Ly. Mrs. McEvoy and Mrs. Ly are the same size. Mrs. McEvoy is shorter than Ms. Deboald.

Have a great weekend!

What floats my boat?

Dear Mom and Dad:

Today we each got the same set of materials to construct a boat that could float and carry a load. Ask me to tell you what materials I used on how many rocks and or stones it could carry.

In dance we performed for our peers! Half of our class was the audience and then we switched. We all did great! We are learning a Broadway number. Ask me to show you a few moves.

Our 30x30 activity today: Writing tree stories for our adopted trees.

Question of the day: Post on the blog your observations about your boat experiment today.

Dear Cranston Families,

You are cordially invited to our 2015 Fish Release!

Where:  Grotto Mountain Pond, Bow Valley Provincial Park (Map Follows)

 When:  Friday May 22nd , 2015 at 1:30PM

The day for our Trout release is fast approaching and we finally have the details for the release.
The actual release will take only about an hour, but all families are invited.  Feel free to bring your fishing rods and a picnic lunch.  The release will go ahead as scheduled rain or shine, so if you choose to come, please dress for all kinds of mountain weather.

People over 16 will require a fishing license if they are going to fish, however children do not.

Staff from the Bow Habitat Station will be on site to answer any questions you may have.  They will also be bringing a few additional fish so that as many children as possible will have a fish to release.  We would like to request that Cranston Students ONLY have the opportunity to release fish first as they have been watching them grow for months; and should there be any left over, younger siblings are welcome to release one as well.

Please note that this is NOT a school or CBE sanctioned event, so parents will be fully responsible for their own children.

We hope to see you there,

Ms. Low & Mr. Southworth

Library

Dear Mom and Dad:

We had a practice fire drill in the afternoon and we did great!

Ask me to tell you about the library presentation. I have mail in my folder that tells you about the summer reading program.

Today we went outside to look at our adopted trees and we began to write some stories about them.

Please watch these videos with your children

Cranston students in grade 3/4 made this great video so that parents and children are informed on how the crosswalk and drop and drive are used. If we all take part and set good examples, this will ensure the safety of all. Thank you very much for your support. Please click on the links below
