Symbols

Dear Mom and Dad:

We talked about what symbols mean today. We looked at some photos of symbols that are found in our city of Calgary.  We saw a picture of the Saddledome and the Calgary tower and right away we knew it was a picture of our city!

In grade 1 and 2, I can:
Tell you what helps us to recognize different groups or communities (e.g., landmarks, symbols, colours, logos, clothing)?
All three classes had gym today with Mr. Southworth and Mr. McDougal.

Question of the day: Post on the blog symbols that you spot over the weekend around our city.

Love,
The Rainbow Triad

Thank you so much!  We will need all the items by Friday December 5. Thank you so much to everyone who is able to help these families J

Dear Mom and Dad:

I might come home with some paint on my class. Don’t worry, It is tempera paint and will was off in the washing machine. We continued building our city. It is looking awesome. We decorated the outside of our buildings, some of us even made cars, trees and roads! Our space is limited in our city and we talked about how we might have to build “up” because we don’t have enough space to build outwards. Ask me to tell you what I added to my building or city today.

The Rainbow Triad

Rainbow City

**if you have any kind of tape at home (masking, scotch, packers tape, duct tape that you can send with your child tomorrow to donate, that would be greatly appreciated. We discovered that an important material that we need is tape for our city.

Dear Mom and Dad:

Rainbow city is now under construction! Today I worked in my building group to bring our ideas to reality. We had a city meeting and talked about what a city needs and how we can all work together as a triad to build our city. We talked about how we would need to space out our buildings such as hospitals and police stations and important buildings that we would need to construct. I used different materials to build today. We talked about how each structure should have a purpose. I can’t wait to show you our city next week during parent teacher conferences.

We continue to work on number sense in our math groups. Ask me to share with you what I did today.

All three classes had music today.

In gym we are working on patterns and assessing our work with a partner.

Question of the day: What structure did you build today and why?

Love,
The Rainbow Triad

Mapping

Dear Mom and Dad:

All three classes had mapping today. It is so neat to be an explorer of the world and discover that there is so much in the world to investigate. Today we went on a scavenger on our huge map. It is so big that I am not even as big as Alberta! Ask me to tell you all of the things that I found on the map.

We read a book called “I know here” and wrote about a special place that we know. Some of us wrote about our classroom. Ask me to tell you what I wrote about.

In gym we continued exploring movement through drumfit.

Mrs. McEvoy’s class had music today.

The Rainbow Triad

Question of the day: Post on the blog something you found on the large map today.

City Planning Committees

Dear Mom and Dad,

This morning we spent some time with the Giant Floor Map. We talked about Canada's endangered species and how the National Parks protect them. We also talked about migration.

In the afternoon, we broke into teams of city planners, and began our planning process. We thought about what a city needs and then as a team, we chose buildings that our city needed. We drew a plan of our buildings. Tomorrow, we will hopefully begin building our cardboard city.  I wonder if there will be any challenges along the way?

Question of the day:
Ask me to tell you what building I am making and how it is important for a city.  Ask me what sort of details my building will have.

Have a great day!

Grounds for Change

Dear Mom and Dad:

We have a new student teacher! His name is Mr. Link and he will be with our triad everyday until the beginning of December. He is going to teacher school to become a teacher and we are very excited to show him what teaching will be all about. We added two new poems in our folders today. Ask me to tell you what the poems were about.

We are working on number sense in math. We are in new math groups today and began to talk about what representing numbers mean.

Mrs. Ly had Roots of Empathy today. Ask me to tell you what story we listened to and what feelings we discussed.

In the afternoon we met with Mrs. Drissler. She is from a program called “Grounds for Change” from the Calgary Zoo. We are thinking about an outdoor learning space for our school! We went outside today to see if we can find shapes and patterns in nature. We also talked about what it means if something is manmade or natural.

We have a new dance teacher. Her name is Ms. Janelle, she taught us how to swing today! So much fun! Ask me to show you some of the moves I learned.

There has been a lot of mix ups with gloves, toques, hats, scarves and snow pants. It would be really helpful if all of your child’s belongings were labeled. Thank you very much!

Question of the day: what shapes and patterns can you find in your home or yard? Post your findings on the blog, also post if it is man made or natural material.

The Rainbow Triad
