Fire Drill

Dear Mom and Dad:

Mrs. Ly and Ms. Deobald’s class had Roots of Empathy today with Ms. Nicole. Ask me to tell you what we wrote about and drew.

We had a guest teacher this afternoon as Ms. Deoblad was away.

Today was our last day with Mission Impossible in gym. During gym there was a fire drill and we all did very well listening to instructions. Coming down from the equipment slowly. Being quiet and lining up with our teacher.

We caught up on our work this afternoon. Ask me to tell you the 3 things I had to complete today.

There is no school this Friday because of PD day.

Question of the day:  Post on the blog something you enjoyed at school today.

Love,
The Rainbow Triad

Words of the week!

Learning from the experts

Dear Mom and Dad:

We had Mrs. Southworth come and talk to our triad about living in the north of Canada. When she was five years old she competed in dog sledding competitions! She shared with us how she has 35 dogs. She also shared some stories with us that were amazing! Ask me to tell you about the polar bear stories.

We then went to the learning commons to observe the fish and meet with a trout expert! Our very own, Mrs. Low! She is very knowledgeable about the trout and was able to answer all of our questions and wonders. Ask me to tell you some things I learned about alevin. (This is the stage in the life cycle that our trout are in).

We read a non-fiction book about polar bears and answered some questions that we came up with such as: Where do they live? What do they eat? What happens to them through the seasons? Interesting facts.

Mrs. Ly and Ms. Deobald’s class had music today. We continued with Mission Impossible today in gym with Mr. McDougal.

Question of the day: We learned many interesting facts today about polar bears, dog sledding, the arctic, and trout! Post on the blog some facts I learned.

A real whales vertebrae!!

Artifacts from the Arctic

Dear Mom and Dad:

For poetry Tuesday, instead of reading a poem by someone, we actually wrote our own poems! Today we learned what an acrostic poem is. Today as a triad, we came up with a poem titled RAINBOW. Here is our poem:

Running for Terry Fox
Adding numbers in math
Inquiring about peace
Nice to new people
Body break outside
Open to tall
Winter celebration

I wrote a poem using my name. We learned that the words we chose should relate to what the title of the poem was. Ask me to tell you some of the things I wrote about myself. I could even write a poem using the name of someone in our family.

We had a special guest teacher come to our classroom to share some artifacts that she had from the Arctic! Mrs. Richardson is a grade 1, 2 teacher at Cranston and her father used to work in the Arctic and would bring home really neat artifacts from there. Ask me to tell you about what I saw. After her presentation, we sketched in our journals and wrote about what we learned.

We ended the day doing a guided drawing of a polar bear. Here is the link if I want to try it at home. Polar Bear Guided Drawing

Mrs. McEvoy’s class had music today. We continued with Mission Impossible today in gym with Mr. McDougal.

Question of the day: Post on the blog something you saw or learned from Mrs. Richardson today.

Memoirs of a Trout

Dear Parents and Guardians of The Rainbow Triad:

Today we (the trout) were the star of the day! We are now in the next stage after the egg in our life cycle. Ask your child to tell you what stage we are in. We have been at Cranston for 11 days now and have hatched out of our eggs. In the afternoon the students drew our life cycle in their visual journals. They listened to a story called “Memoirs of a Goldfish”.  Students learned that memoirs means diary.  Students are writing their own memoirs and pretending they are trout fish! Today they started with writing about how we might feel in the egg. Some of the things written were “Help it’s squishy!” “Where’s my mom and dad?”  “I wonder what I will look like when I am born.”

Mrs. McEvoy was away today. Mrs. Deobald and Mrs. Ly's class had music.

In gym, students had Mission Impossible! Ask your child to tell you what the rules were and what some of the obstacles were.

Question of the day: Post on the blog what you think we (the trout) are thinking about right now.

Love,
The Trout

Lines in the world

Dear Mom and Dad:

We read a story called “Bad Day At Riverbend” by Chris Van Allsburg. We did not read the ending though and had to come with our own idea as to what the ending will be. Ask me to tell you what the story was about and what I wrote as my ending. Then ask me to tell you what the ending was in the story. We continue to work on sentence structure and that our sentences need to make sense. This weekend ask me to write you a sentence. Grade 1’s should be able to have the correct spelling for word wall words, capital letter at the beginning of my sentences, finger spaces and periods. Grade 2’s should be writing detailed sentences and can be adding more than one idea into a sentence. We can use transition words such as: because, then, before, after etc.

We talked about what lines are and where we can find lines. We noticed that lines are EVERYWHERE! They are found in all objects and we can find lines on our bodies as well. We spent some time at the end of the day listening to calming art music as we drew lines in our journals. We first had to practice copying some lines to help us take a closer look at details. They were simple lines at first and then got harder and harder.

Question of the day: What lines have you discovered over the weekend. Tell us what kind of lines they are and where you found them.

The Rainbow Triad
