Dear Mom and Dad:
“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing’s
going to get better, it’s not!” - Dr. Seuss The Lorax
This school year marks the 100th year since the
passenger pigeon has become extinct. Ask me to tell you what extinct means. We
also talked about what endangered and threatened species mean. Did you know
that even insects and plants could become extinct?
We each folded a passenger pigeon to help remind us that it
is important to care for the environment and protect the animals that live in
it. Ask me to tell you some of the things I can do to make a difference and
help protect the environment.
We will part of the world flock called “Fold a Flock”. There
are over a million passenger pigeons that have been folded all around the
world. Our family can fold a passenger pigeon too if we would like and I can
bring it to school tomorrow (please write your name or family name on your
pigeon) We will hang them all in our classroom! Here is the link:
CLICK HERE to get the folding instructions and template!
Tomorrow we will count how many we have folded altogether
and register our triad and be part of the world flock. The passenger pigeon
sculpture that you see in the photo was carved by Mr. Evan, Ms. Deoblad’s
boyfriend. He heard that we were going to learn about the passenger pigeon and wanted
to create this for our class to remind us to take care of the environment!
We also talked about how the Ann and Sandy Cross
Conservation Area relates to our lesson about the passenger pigeon.
Question of the day: Post on the blog what you can do to
protect the environment and help protect our animals.
Love,
The Rainbow Triad
