Math Inquiry - The Napping House

Dear Mom and Dad:

Thank you for helping me post on the blog! Today we reviewed what our teacher's job is during daily 5. We were reminded that it is not my teacher's job to make sure I am doing my job because it's actually my job to make sure I'm doing my job. Our teachers are working with students and the reading tables and if we are all doing our job we can all get our work done. Today we got through 3 rounds of daily 5. Because we have introduced 3 choices to daily 5, 1)read to self 2) read to someone, and 3) work on writing, I got to all 3 today. During daily 5 literacy, I can choose what I want to do for each round but I cannot repeat the same thing again in another round.

We had gym today with Mr. Southworth and Mr. McDougal, ask me to tell you what we did.

We used our knowledge of investigating to try and solve a math problem. We read the book "The Napping House" by Audrey Wood and it was a silly story about a granny, a child, a dog, a cat, a mouse, and a flea who are all sleeping in a bed in the napping house. We have been talking a lot about inquiry and being investigators. Inquiry is a process that happens throughout our school year career where we ask questions and wonder and then we investigate. We will be amazing investigators. After reading the story our wonder was "how many legs were in the napping house?" We worked in groups of 4-5 and using one marker and one large piece of chart paper we had to work together to come up with some answers. The tricky part was showing our process and showing our thinking. Some of us used numbers, pictures and words to show our thinking. We will be going over it on Monday and allow groups to share their work. There were lots of conversation and we also had a discussion as a class as to what it means to cooperate in a group and working together.

Question of the day: Work with your family to try and investigate: (grade 1) how many eyes are there in your family? (grade 2) How many fingers are there in your family? Post on the blog how you figured it out, not just the answer.

Have a great weekend! We can't wait to see what you post.

Love,
The Rainbow Triad
